The Best Advice for Keeping Small Pets Warm During Winter

It is absolutely essential for all of our animals to keep warm during the winter time. This includes all of our smaller pets too. The Hafod Y Bryn team are here to provide you with as much advice as possible to ensure your pets are kept as warm and cosy as possible. So, read on for the best tips and tricks to keeping your pets toasty this winter!

Rodents

The easiest and most cost-effective way to keep your rats, hamsters, gerbils or mice warm this winter is to simply add some extra bedding to their home. Be sure to change the bedding regularly to prevent your pet from catching a cold or living in wet bedding. The deeper you can make their bedding, the better. This will allow them to burrow further in when the temperatures drop.

There are a variety of “hidey houses”, hammocks, and “snuggle caves” that can be purchased from both high street retailers and independent pet shops. These will often be made from a fleece material and are incredibly soft and warm, perfect for your pet to snuggle inside when it gets cold.

Rabbits & Guinea Pigs

Rabbits and guinea pigs are almost always kept outdoors throughout the year. If bringing them into a warmer environment during the winter isn’t an option, you may want to look into ways of keeping them cosy. Provide them with as much extra bedding as possible. Maybe even consider adding some cage liners to provide further insulation and protection from the wind.

Ensure that the water supply of any pets kept outdoors does not freeze. That means changing the water as frequently as possible. You may also want to consider adding insulation to the water bottle (old thermal clothing or simply some bubble wrap).
