We know that the summer season has ended, but it’s still incredibly important to make sure that your furry friend is consistently well-hydrated. Just like us, a lack of water can make your dog feel very ill or tired, and it can potentially cause an assortment of dangerous health problems.
Sure, you might see your dog frequently drink, but sometimes it can be hard to tell how much they’re actually drinking against how much they’re spilling all over the floor! We completely understand that your dog can’t exactly tell you when they’re thirsty, though, which is why we’ve put this handy little guide together.
Understanding how to encourage your dog to keep hydrated can make them happier, healthier and less at risk of complications. In this article, you’ll learn how to tell if your pet is thirsty and what you can do to make sure they regularly drink enough.

Leave their bowls somewhere nice and cool (with easy access)
There’s nothing quite like a cold drink when you’re hot!
You should leave your dog’s water bowl somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight or heat. This will stop the water in the bowl from heating up past room temperature, as well as prevent any discomfort to your dog as they drink.
It should also be easy for them to get to their bowl whenever they need – they shouldn’t have to struggle!
Keep their bowls clean
This one shouldn’t need to be said!
It’s extremely important to make sure that the bowls your dog drinks from are cleaned at LEAST once a day. It won’t take long to wash up with soap and water – all you’ll need to do then is rinse it out and fill it up.
A dog won’t drink from a dirty bowl, or they could potentially get ill; dehydration would then make their illness worse.
As well as giving their bowl a good clean every day, you should regularly replace your dog’s water to make sure that it’s fresh.
How to know if your dog is dehydrated
If you do suspect that your dog is dehydrated, there are some things to look out for:
Looking for water
A thirsty animal will always try to find water. For example: your dog may be sat around where their water bowl usually is, following you around more or even dribbling!
If there is a pond or other water source in your garden, your dog may try to drink out of that. Similarly, they might be waiting by any taps that they know they’ve previously drank from.
Dry nose
A healthy dog will have a happy wet nose! If your dog has a very dry nose, it could be a sign that they’re dehydrated. Obviously, different factors can affect this, so check their gums as well; if they’re pale and dry, get your dog to some water ASAP.
Erratic Behaviour
A dehydrated dog will not be themselves; chances are they’ll be mopey and tired, skittish or just acting weird. If you give your dog some water and they still aren’t feeling too good, maybe it’s time to visit your vet.
