Play time
One of the most important things to do is establish that you will spend a period of time every day playing with your canine. It is especially important to do with a puppy, as the way that you raise them will play a large part on their character they carry with them for their lives. Throw some balls or play hide and seek with your little companion. Bored puppies will result in chewed up furniture and mess around the house.
Give them doggy treats and chews
Try some doggy treats and chews to see which ones they enjoy the most. When you offer your puppy treats and chews at the right time, it can reinforce good behaviour and can keep them occupied for a long time. Besides, a dog chewing up a chew rather than your furniture is definitely preferable!
Teach them a trick
From making them sit, to making them roll over – there are plenty of different dog tricks that you can try to teach your puppy. Teaching them from a young age is better for this, as they are much more enthusiastic and willing to please their owner. Teaching your pup means you are interacting with it, which is always a good thing.
Give your pup a bath
Whether they have been out in muddy puddles, or simply haven’t had a bath in a few weeks, definitely try and incorporate this into your dog caring regime. It is a great bonding experience that will build your relationship, get them used to bathing and keep them clean. Dogs don’t use the same shampoo as us, so make sure you have some special doggy shampoo for them to use.
Always be gentle
At time, your puppy could be a real handful. Always be gentle and understanding, so avoiding the urge to scare, threaten, force train or frighten them must be achieved. If your dog does something wrong, it is only because they haven’t been shown the right way enough times and not reinforced for its good behaviour. Sometimes, especially during toilet training times, your puppy will make a mess. Instead of getting angry with them, take them outside, reward them when they do it the right way – and you’ll soon have a happy, well trained dog!
